At lie Magistrate's Court vislwduy Horace Waller Ormrod was chargeil ivilii insobriety and with assaulting Constable Hunter. He pleaded guilty. Jn relating the circumstances of the assault. hulKlnspector- Slicclian stated that Urmrod had been arrested bocaiw- he wis drunk, and bad caused a disturbance. Constable J unter put him in a cab to lake nun to tho police station. While on the way, and without provocation, Ormrod struck Constable Hunter on the month with severe- effect. The constable presently obtained assistance from another man, but in the station Ormrod had again assailed the constable. A fine of £3 was made. CARTER FORGETS HIMSELF. Being drunk while in charge of a horse and cart was the substaoico of the charge against Edward Kelliher, who did not dcuy

Sub-Inspector Shechan stated that at about six o'clock oil Mondav evening Kelliher had been found drunk in charge of a vehicle in Riddiford Street. At that, time the street was verv busv, and so Kelliher was in danger of injuring himself, and also of injuring others. Tho magistrate: Defendant, you had better bo more careful next time. You are convicted and fined 10s., in default 2-t hours' imprisonment.

GOLD CHAIN AND NOTE. Joseph Moore was charged with the theft of a £o note and a gold chain, valued at £j, from John Shellev, of Wanganui. Chief-Detective Broberg asked that the accused should 1)0 remanded to appear at Wanganui on February 22. Bail (iMO) was allowed. ■' OTHER CASES. WAS nE A COOK? The Inspector of Awards claimed .610 as a penalty for breach of award from the Wellington Ferries, Ltd. Mr. K. M. Watson appeared for the company.

Tho complaint against the Ferry Company was that they had employed' a man (named Bradley) at Day's Bav* House as a second cook at a wage of' £l ss. per week, whereas the Cooks' and Waiters' Award stipulated for a pavment of £1 10s. . ■ '

The defence was that Bradley was not employed as a cook, but as a general hand in the kitchen and elsewhere. Bradley corroborated this in evidence. Decision was reserved. CLAIM AND DENIAL. Whitniore Green proceeded against Walter Evensen for tho recovery of .£5 16s. Mr. D. S. Smith appeared for plaintiff, and Mr. E. J. Fitzgibbon for defendant. Plaintiff's claim was respecting a .£5 cheque alleged to have been dishonoured on presentment, and 10s. as interest at 8 per cent. The claim was repudiated by defendant. Decision was reserved. ATTEMPTED CHINESE TILL. Attempted theft from a Chinese fruiterer's till was alleged against two boys who wero before tho Juvenile Court yesterday. One lad was 14 years and 'the other 11 years old. The* information against the younger boy was dismissed; but the other, who had been before the Court on two previous occasions, was convicted and ordered to appear for sentence when called. His father undertook to send him to the country, and to put him in suitable care.
