ROSENEATH RATEPAYERS.
THE SCHOOL QUESTION. A meeting of the Roscncath ratepayers was held last night in the Roscnoath Schoolhouse. There were about twontv present. Mr. Ward (tho president) was in tlio chair. Various matters concerning roads, street lighting, and business of ii local nature being disposed of, it was decided that the City Council should be aslced to substitute for •'Oriental Bay" the name "Roseneath" on the front "of tie tramcars, and on the shelter-shed at tlie terminus, which was reallv in Koseuciitli, and nut i:i Oriental Bay. e Ihe most important business of the evening was a motion introduced by tho chairman concerning the present site and condition of the school. It appears that the attendance of pupils has been on tho decline for some time past. 'This tho chairman said was due partly to the exposed site of the building and partly to an insufficient staff. The school, situated as it was at the extreme north of tho district, was most out of the way; the children all coming from the south, and none from the north. He thought that as the residents of Hataitai were increasing in numbers that it would lie advisable to shift the school more into the centre, between Koseneath and Hataitai. Ihe building was on a very exposed piece of ground, and on wet and windy davs some of the class rooms could iiot be used on account of tho wind and water penetrating through. For these reasons many of the residents had taken their children away, and more threatened to do so if the state of tilings continued. The ground npon which the school was built belonged to tho Defence Department, who could, if they so wished, force the committee to remove the school at their own cost. The motion to rcmovo tho school had beeu already laid before tho School Committee, who refused to take any steps in the matter. Mr. Ward moved that n committee of ratepayers bo formed to investigate the matter. The Hataitai ratepayers were willing to co-operate, and it was further suggested that they also should form a similar committee. The motion was carried without dissent, and the following were selected as a committee: Messrs. W. Ward, Stott, Spear, T. Taylor, R. Taylor, anil Captain Post.
