ENGINEER'S REPORT.

Tho Tramways Committee of the City Council yesterday received tho following report from tho engineer and manager of the Tramway Department (Mr. S. Richardson) :— Tramway Account.—The gross revenue for the four weeks shows a decrease of X'J3, and the working expenses an increase of X'SOG, as compared with tho corresponding period of last year. Tho total results from April 1, 1911, to January 5, 1912, show increases in the gross revenue and working expenses of w£5G69 and .£4-114 respective!;. Alter allowing for all capital charges, thero is a credit balance on the. forty weeks of operation to date of .£2029, or .€3B less than last year.

Power Supply Account.—Tho revenuo from the sale of current for the four weeks shows an increase of .£'lsß, and the working expenses an increase of Xl 3. After providing for capital charges, thero is a credit balance to dato of ,£714, or .£209 more than last year.

Tramways and Power Supply.—The net result to date on the combined accounts is a credit balance of .£2744, an increase of .£l7l. Appropriations amounting to .£3558 for special expenditure on works not capitalised have been made, leaving a debit balance on revenue account of £SU at this date.

Traffic Statistics.—Tho number of passengers carried for tho four necks amounted to 1,934,359, a decrease of 15,365 on last year. Tho total passengers carried to dato amount to 17,878,980, or 821,563 more than last year. The number of car miles run to date, amount to 1,750,007, or 30,329 more than last year. Tho average traffic revenue per car mile on city lines to dato amounted to H.Cld., nn increase of .51d. per car mile. The avcrago working expenses per car milp over the whole system to date amount to 10.3U1,, or .39d. per car mile more than last year.
