H.M.S. LION'S TRIALS.
The new battle-cruiser Lion, which is the largest warship in commission and also (ho longest cruiser in the world, has tied in the. speed record for armoured ships with the German battle-cruiser Moitke, maintaining 29." knots in her eight-hour trial. This is precisely the speed of the Molfkc as given by the iafest German authorities. The Lion left Plymouth on Monday morning (January 8) for her eight-hour full-power trial, and concluded it at seven the same evening with perfectly satisfactory results. The contract horse-power of 70,000 units wos maintained throughout by her turbine engines. Her designed speed was 28 knots, .but she was expected by all to exceed it—and she did. Owin'e to thick mist, which prevailed throughout the day. it was impossible to test, her speed on the measured mile off the coast of Cornwall, as the marks could not bo seen. The log,' however, gave her a mean speed of 20.7 knots for the run. The maximum speed reached was 31.7 knots. So far the Lion's trials have given complete satisfaction. In her 24-. hour trial at three-quarter |K>wcr her mean speed wa* 24J knots. The following is a comparison of the main features of the Lion and Mollke:— Broadside. Tonnage. Power. lb. Speed.
