BELL BLOCK FIRE. New Plymouth, February IV. A six-roomed house at Bell Block was destroyed by firo last night. It was owned by Mr. C. T. Rundle, and occupied by Mr. O'e.i. King. Thero was on insurance of ,£l. r )0 on the house and .£IOO on the contents in the Guardian office. THE WING OF THE FEDERATION. Auckland, February 17. A meeting of general labourers approved of tho action of tho delegates at the City Council meeting, and it was resolved to refer tho whole dispute to the Federation of Labour. PRICES FOR FISH, Auckland, February 17. About one hundred fishermen are at present meeting to discuss tho dispute with the wholesale dealers respecting the prices paid for fish. It wis resolved unanimously to supply shops at 3s. per bundle until the dealers came to terms. SELLING FLAXBOURNE. Blenheim, February 17. Ten thousand two hundred and seventy- . threo acres of the Fiaxbourne estate were offered at auction in Blenheim to-dav, on behalf of the trustees of the late Sir C. Clifford and Sir F. Weld. Tho land was offered in eight sections, and all were disposed of. There was a largo attendance, and prices ranged from ,£1 15s. to £16 per acre. HOSPITAL SATURDAY. Gisborne, February IS. Hospital Saturday resulted in .£l*so 14s. 3d. being collected in tho town. The hotel collections and country results have yet to be ascertained. Last year .£2lO was "collected, which it is hoped will bo exceeded when the final results are made up. MOTOR FIRE ENGINE. ■ Gisborne, February.lß. The Gisborne Fire Board is contemplating the purchase of a motor engine. Inspector Hugg has arrived to confer on the matter. BAND CONTEST. Gisborne, February 18. The band contest has concluded. ' The Waihi and Whangarei bands left on Saturday, and the Wcstport, Wahganui, and Talnierston North bands left to-day. MILITARY PROSECUTIONS. Christchurch, February 16. Several young men who have failed to take the oath of allegiance under the Defence Act were before the magistrate to- j day, and in a, number of cases lines of £2 Were inflicted.
SERIOUS CHARGE. Taihaps, February IG. At the Police Court to-day, Peter Tergusson, shepherd, of Erewhon Station, was charged with criminally assaulting the wife of Thomas White. Tho alleged assault took place during the husband's absence. Accused was .ominitted for trial. Bail was allowed. JURY OF ELEVEN: PRISONER SATISFIED. Christchurch, February 16. _ On Wednesday, Jfr. Justice Denniston informed William James, who had been convicted tho day before of theft, and sentenced to three years' imprisonment, that he was entitled if ho wished to have another trial as one of the jurors hearing the case hnd not been sworn. The prisoner elected to have a fresh trial. This .morning, however, James informed the .Tudgo that he had not quite understood his Honours remarks the other dav, and he was now prepared to accept tlio verdict of the eleven jurors. A new trial will therefore not take place.

Semple, organising secretary of the lederation of Labour, leaves next week for Australia, to arrange an understanding with the coal min:rs and waterside unions of the Commonwealth. GAME IMPORTATIONS. t , , j ■ .Auckland, February 16. Included in the cargo of the Morea, which arrived this morning, were a large number of English partridges, Mongolian pheasants, teal, and pintail ducks all purebred. This is probably the largest shipment of its kind ever brought to New Zealand. The birds were imported by the lauranga Acclimatisation Society. Oh tho voyage the mortality was somewhat heavy among the partridges, the death roll being about 40 out of 150. THE PUBLICAN'S PLIGHT, Hokitika, February 15. An unusual charge was heard at the Magistrate's Court to-day, the holder of a. publican's licenso being charged with also being a member of a firm of auctioneers. Counsel for the defence stated his client was not a member of the firm. The magistrate stated that no offence was disclosed under the Act, and he had no jurisdiction, the subject being one entirely for consideration by the Licensing Committee. Ho dismissed the. charge. ° MAILS AT AUCKLAND. Auckland, February 16. A quantity of English, European. American, and Australian mails arrived by the steamers Morea and Makura this morning. The Makura, from Vancouver and Australia brought 370 bags in all! Of th<se, 250 will be dealt with in Auckland, and 122 go south this evening. 'Hie Morea carried an English parcel mail of 20 packages.
