MATCH AT SYDNEY,
HAS NEW BOWLER BEEN FOUND?
HAZLITT'S SUCCESS
BAGS SEVEN ENGLISH WICKETS,
By Telegraph-Press Aesocialion-Copyrielit (Rec. February 18, 5.5 p.m.) Sydney, February 18. Fine bright weather marked the opening of tho second day's play in the match M.C.C. Touring Team v. New .South Wales, and the wicket was again perfect. The, attendance totalled 11,500.
Overnight the English score had been 183 for two wickets, Hobbs and Gunn having been got rid of. Tho two notouts were Rhodes (88) and Hearnc (16), and they resumed to the bowling of Scott and Hazlitt.
Both played freely, Rhodes bringing up his century after 150 minutes' play. When ho was 32, however, Hearnc hit out at Hazlitt, and lifted him to Emery at deep point. The partnership had put on 70 runs. Foster received an ovation on joining Rhodes, but ho was soon out, being caught and bowled by Hazlitt just when he had reached double figures. Douglas also was short-lived as, in running a short one after scoring five, Bardsley threw his wicket down from half-way to the boundary. A few balls later Rhodes, who had reached 119, gave his first chance, and this was cjuickly snapped by Kelleway in tho slips, nazlilt was again the successful bowler. The ball rose high and Rhodes mistimed it in endeavouring to cnt. Ho had played a sterling innings lasting 208 minutes, and his total comprised 12 fours.
Woolley and Mead were then together and, at tho luncheon interval the English score was 202 for six wickets.
In his second over, after resuming Hazlitt bowled Wodley with a clinker ball which seemed to hang in the air, drop, and then shoot fast off the pitch. Hazlitt's five wickets so far had cost 79
With Vine in play became very slow, and scoring strokes wero few and far between. Mead reached 21, and then lifted Hazlitt to Bardsley at mid-on—an easy catch.
Barnes followed, and a couple of balls later Vine brought the total to 300 by lifting Kelleway to long-on. The Kel-leway-Hazlitt combination was presently responsible for Vino's downfall, however, as Kelleway brilliantly caught him in tho slips. Strudwick had played only one ball when Barnes pulled Emery t', Kelleway at mid-on. England thus closed with an advantage of 203 runs. Hazlitt bowled without a spell throughout tho day, and kept a remarkable length. Trnmper anil Gregory opened tho second innings of New South Wales to the bowling of Foster and Barnes. Both showed better form than in the first innings and scored 50 in half an hour, Trumper's square cuts and leg glances being especially good. His 50 occupied just 50 minutes, Gregory scoring at half that pace.
With the total at 81 Trunrper was run out through a brilliant return by Barnes, Strudwick whipping tho bails off the stumps with lightning rapidity. The retiring batsman had hit six fours. Shortly after Bardsley went in rain started and play was adjourned till Monday. Following are the detailed scores:— New South Wales.—First Innings, Bardsley, c. Gunu, b. Foster 2 Collins, b.
