(By .Teleerapn.'— Snecial Corre'sßondonU ' ' New Plymouth, February 15. The .Tiiiu, which had fallen throughout the night, ceased at 8. a.in., and the sun shone out brightly. . Tho courss. was in splendid ofder, though' it cut out'a bit id-the first tsyo races, but, as .tho day wore on, it dried up completely. There was a good attendance, nnd some great racing. Cornelian, n'Jio had ■ircKnhgo of jociny to-day,..saw a very short price in tho Hack Hurdles, but ho was.never dangerous,, olid.- finished, out of a place. A rise os.jj.stphe effectually stopped.,Rnwinin..al tne""erftl of the-twelve furlongs after'.she had niade'aU' the'running. Silva then took ..charge -from-Silver-Cluse, and teat him in the run home. • -Darby Paul finished on well, but Allure and Highden wero never prominent..,-....'
R. Hatch was substituted for A. Oliver on Gladiolo' in the Grandstand Handicap. Though tho public, did; not liko the change, it came out .correctly, for the jnare was quickly in command, .'and won iill tho way, l'iriwai. was running second at tho turn, but failed to finish. Ashbv came from a long way back, and got third place, just in front of St. Bill, Tobias, and' Dirge. '• i : . .' :
C'lemoes. and Aloha were best supported in the Omata. Hack Handicap. The latter seemed to..ruu better as the result ■if her 'first day's racp, and, after being in a lot of trouble, she camo again in the straight, - aiid won by a length from Glonfeni, with Royal Dragoon a neck further away. Watinc'aml Aloha were first out, but the latter, dropped back, and Royal Dragoon and Glonfern ran up to Watine. The last-named was done with <it the straight, whern Alolia camo a.gain, and, in a. good race, won by a length. Gordon and Dover Straits were the next to finish.' ••' •"
After a long series-of failures, Coromandel made amends to-day, when ho scored in tho big race.-- He was .somewhat for-tunate,-for the saddle on Jargon slipped round,; and, for, the last six furlongs, the horso _ 'was ■ ridden bare-back-ed. As it . was, ho was only beaten by a neck, so that the performance was a-good one. Golden Loop made the running for'a-mile, when the field closed up. Dearest, Gloy, and Jargon wero in a line'half a furlong from home, and, closo up, was Coromandol. The last-named'stayed on the best, and won by a neck.' Dearest was fourth. Golden Loop was the unlucky horse, as, going out of the straight, ho slipped, and was nearly down. His performance was above the average, and it appears as if the chestnut-will be more than useful in handicaps lit the back end of the season. ■ ■ <" ■. .
Plantation was a staunch favourite in the Open Welter Handicap, and ho landed the stake. Deeley had him out well, and, after allowing Overtime to make the pact, down the hack, the favourite went to- the: front three furlongs from home, and was not again troubled. Te Rnti was ft head in front of Overtime, with Master Sylvia fourth. St. [ Petersburg and Manawakaha were , the'bosl-siipported mounts in the Kawau Itack Handicap, and they finished in that order. At the Start. Master Tupuhi and Te Wahhrqa led at a clipping pare, but the former covered a lot of ground. The field was hunched at the half-mile, and so until" the straight, where Oliver slipped Manawakaha through on the-rails.- ■Master Tupuhi was i'no hist to-be beaten, and St. Petersburg then challenged the leaders. fn : ,i-hard finish;'Deeley got him up, and won by a hwd:v" ' . ' Four of the five runners in the ] trowel] Handicap were evenly '.inokel- only a few pounds separating them. Crown Pearl was the quickest to begin. He stalled off challenges by Ashby and Red Lupin in the straight, and won by a couple of lengths. Ashby was making his fourth appearance at the meeting, and seemed a bit. sore. This apparentlv caused him to "hung out" considerably in the straight.
The last rnt'O furnished a really exciting finish, and, when the post was reached, the throe placed horses wero in a line. No one but tha jiKljje cull! My what 'had won, and his placing* were received without murmur.. Ohinpo -,\\i> the first to show out. but- Onltec soon joined her, and the pair wero toztther at the bottom of the straight, ifcre the field bunched, but Oliinre and Cinltei- went away again.- Royal Simon came very Fust over the.last lituidii-d yards', and cmislit the other pair on the i;O«t. .
