FEILDING. Three rinks of Alarlon howlers visited J'eihling yesterday, and had an enjoyable game on the local green. In the aggregate the home team won by a substantial majority, though one of the Marlon rinks won iheir game. Mr. W. 13. Chamberlain, who disposed of his engineering business sumo lime ago, leaves FeUding next month for New Smith Wales, where lie will engage in mining pur.Miils. Mr. Chamberlain came, to I'eilding 35 years ago witli his Cither's family. Buchanan, M.P., is making energetic representations lo the Minister for Agriculture, with a view of improving tho careless and injurious way in which cheese is at present conveyed by rail to tho port ot grading and shipment. A number of new books have recently been added to the shelves of the Carterton Public Library. A start has been made with the erection of a new operating-room 'on tho south-west end of the Carlertoii Post Office. Commencing from Wednesday, the Carterton Telephone Exchange will be kept open from S a.m. till 10 p.m. The swimming baths which have been constructed at tho Belvedere School measure 55ft. by 18ft., and will run to a depth of from sft. to ;)ft. The approximate cost is i£3o, and, as soon as Hie Wairarapa South County Council lav the pipes across the road, the baths will be ready for use. A half-holiday is to bo observed in Carterton on Wednesday next. The occasion is "People's Day" at the Masterton Show. OTAKI, The gymkhana, which wns organised to rais? funds for the Anglican Church, took place on Wednesday afternoon, and although tho weather was dull and threatening Hie attendance was satisfactory. During the day a snorts programme was arranged, and various events were got off. Tlid'o wore several stalls, side shows, etc., and all did good business, while, to add to the harmony of the proceedings, the brass band nlaycd selections. In tho evening a concert was held. Jinny of the concert items were well rendered. The Dramatic Club gave "Under False Colours."
On Tuesday c.vcniii'j Mr. C. Whiting, who is leaving for Australia, was entertained at Paraparaumu, and presented with a travelling rug, ,a raid alhert, and pendent, while Mrs. Whiting received a silver-hacked mirror, brush, and coilib. The presentations were made on behalf of the.'residents, the liifle Club, and the Anglican , Church. Constable Wade, of Wellington, is at present relieving horc, Constable SathcrIcy being indisposed. Mr. Cromb, late of Central Ohißo, has purchased Messrs. Whiting Hros. , farm at Parnparaumu, and lias taken possession. Mr and Mrs C. Whiting take up temporary residence in Levin, and afterwards proceed to Australia. Miss K. Lynch, of Paraparauimi, is at uresert at To Aroha for the benefit of her health. Mr. George Powell, who died here on Monday, was the youngrst son of the lato Mr. William Powell, of Sawbach, Shropshire (Eiutand). nnd was born in IEIH. On arrival in New Zealand in 1881 he took up residence in Gisborue, later went to Foxton. and 24 years ago took up residence at Otaki.
