Woodrow Wilson, Governor of New Jersey, has opened his campaign for the Democratic nomiimlion for tho Presidency. He paid that the country's business had nothing to fear from progressive policies for public affairs. Thp present l?e----publican Party, which sprang from Abraham Lincoln, was a mysterious dispensation of Providence. Economic affairs could not continue as they were organised at present. A sound, progressive policy was the only hope of curing tho present ills.
Democrats in Missouri have decided to support Mr. Champ Clurk for tho Democratic nomination for the Presidency. MR. ROOSEVELT PRESSED TO STAND. New York, February 13. Mr. Roosevelt has received numerous influential requests to become a Presidential candidate. He has decided to take a week to think it over. SOUTH AFRICAN POLITICS, . e PROVINCIAL FINANCE. The Financial Commissioners' report states that owing to tho trend towards smaller self-governing -areas it is disinclined to recommend the enlargement of provincial powers in South Africa.
The Commissioners recommend that in the meanwhile tho Government grant half tho provincial expenditure, tho provinces defraying the remainder from direct taxation.
