E. T. HOOLEY.
» SENT TO GAOL FOR A YEAR, By Telocr'vpli-I'i'csa (Rcc. February 12, 0.20 a.m.) London, February 11. Mr. Ernest Terah Hooley, tho one-timo famous company promoter, has been sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment for obtaining by false pretences from Mr. Twiedalo a cheque for .£2OOO with intent to defraud. For the defence, it was argued Hint tho charges on Riseley Hall were not ordinary mortgages, since they <Jid not restrict Hooley's power to sell. The jury spent twenty-five minutes in considering tho verdict. Mr. Justice Pbiliimore agreed with the verdict, and said Hooley was possibly not alone blameworthy for young Twetdale losing .£27,500 in a year and a half, and becoming liable for a further .£16,000. nevertheless the offence was serious enough. The prisoner was sentenced to the second division, the Judge stating that tho privilege of writing- was appropriate in the case of an educated business man. Hooley was unmoved, and made no reply. In the earlier proceedings counsel for the defence said that Mr. Tweedalc inherited a fortune of .£15,000 when he came of age. He was now under twentythree. He came into possession of that fortune in August of last year; .£15,000 was in freehold property, and the remaining .£30,000 was in investments readily convertible into cash. In October of last year Mr. Twoedale was introduced to Mt. Hooley. Thereafter they entered into a number of transactions, with the result that bv Nnvcmlier Mr. Tweedalc had parted' with all the easily convertible portions of his fortune ' '•"" nnd mado himself liable for something mors.
