THE PAHIATUA SHOW.
♦ GENERAL SUMMARY. BATHER ADVERSE WEATHER. IBj Telegraph—Special Ke»ort«r.l Pahiatua, February 9. Tho Pqliiataa-Akitio A. and 1 , . Association held its annual show to-day at tho new showgrounds, on the Hull Estate, 'i'lio new grounds comprise übout IS acres, and considerable progress has been made by tho association in tho way of improvements. The most noticeable structure; is tho grandstand, which provides .seating accommodation for over 300 people, and covers a largo dining-room, secretary's office, and cloakroom. Although in the rough just novr, tho ground is being improved. Beforo long it should be a standing tribute to the progressive spirit of the association, and, unfortunately for tho Association its new stand was required for shelter purposes to-day. Tho morning broke dull and threatening, several brisk showers' fell Before midday, and, after lunch, the wind changed, and heavy rain fell all tho afternoon. In spite of the wretched weather there was a fairly large attendance, the gato takings being about tho sumo as last year, but hundreds who had not started lor the showgrounds before tho rain commenced, were kept away. Whilst the show proper suffered in tho above respect, the Horticultural and Industrial Show, which is being run in conjunction with tho field show, has proved an unqualified success, as it is Iμing held under cover. Taken all round," the show. is n well-supported district effort, but tho entries aro far from heavy in any section. ; In .the...cattle- classes,'.. tho only purebied stock entered consisted of Jerseys and Holsteins. W. H. and A. K. Booth, of Cartcrton,' between. them carried all the Jersey firsts, and -Air. AV. E. Bayliss had a very successful day with. his HolRteins, his closest opponents being Messvs. A. J. Gallichan and M. O'Connor. Mr. Bayliss was also much in evidenco in the dairy section. . Tho sheop classes wore very thin, nnd competition .was confined to a handful of local -breeders. ■ Tho horses made a convincing show, some of tho draughts and hacks being .excellent. : Cattle Awards.
