DOG-DETECTIVE.
A CLEVER ALLY OF TTIE ODESSA POLICE. A highly-prized member of the- Odessa detective force, and, deservedly so, is Spitz, ,i prick-eared, bundle-haired, crossbred terrier of three years. Mo is marvellously intelligent aiid perfectly trained, and possesses the born instinct of an alert and unerring detective. Recently (says the "Daily News" correspondent; Spitz traced tho three perpetrators of a double murder committed near Shestakova, a small township about 23 miles distant from Odessa. He was put upon the trail some thirty hours after the murder was committed. lie tracked two of the murderers to their hiding-place in ono village, and the third to another village six miles distant. lie also led tho police to a spot on a river bank where- the murderers had droppxl a blood-stained billhook. When Spitz runs down his prey he fastens his teeth in tho person's leg or tears the culprit's clothes. In the Shestakova crime tho three men brought to- bay by Spitz confessed to tho crime. Tho other day tho manager of a works in the I'e.ressyp suburb and his assistant were waylaid in their - droschky, robbsd, and most brutally beaten. There was no trace of tho robbers, and the invaluable Spitz was brought on the scene. After circling round again and again with his nose to the ground Spitz vjas unleashed, and immediately started for tho villago of Mali Kulynlnik, five versts away. Here ho entered the open door of a small cottage, hut came out again, and for a minute or so stood irresolute. Three young men, were coming down the village street. Spitz made a sudden rush at him, seizing one by the belt. When he was pulled oil', he fastened his teeth in the leg of a second. He, was again lorn away, but did not attack the third youth. Tho two young men were arrested. Spitz then went off on another trail, leading the police to a lonely hut, in which was found another man in hiding, whom the dog immediately attacked. The three men were then taken to the hospital, where the victim of the outrage ident'fied them as his assailants, as did also tho izvostchik who drovo tho victims. Tho men were also recognised by the manager's assistant. When Spitz's special detective missions are accomplished he relapses into a perfectly indifferent mood, and is anxious only'to get homo to dine.
