TEHERAN THE BEAUTIFUL.
A Persian proverb says Ispahan is beautiful, Shiraz is lovely, but Teheran is most beautiful of all. Indeed, Teheran is the most beautiful town in Persia, and Persians themselves often speak of it as tho Paris of Persiv Although the city lies on a sandy level there are gentle hills to the north, and far in tho distance one may see a range of mountains crowned by a majestic and snow-covcral peak. The features of Teheran that attract the traveller's attention first are its city walls and its hundred towers that stand at intervals in the wide circle of the ramparts. In the centre of iha town is tho great square of the arsenal, where an enormous number of now obsolete arms are stored. The great Boulevard des Ambassadcurs, as tho French would call it, which is near the aisenal, is one of the finest (o be found outside Paris. If this part of the town has a modern aspect, the southern part of the city has retained its oriental character, and here palaces, bazaars, and mosques jostle one another, surrounded by narrow, winding, mysterious streets. Teheran is one of the dream cities of the East, and those who know it must earnestly hope that no illfortuuo will overtake it in the present crisis.
