WANGANUI JOTTINGS.

187 TcleeraDh.— CorresDondenU i Wanganui, February 6. The death occurred last evening, after a long illness, of Sir. Fred M. Field, a well-known member of the business community here. The deceased, who was a son of llr. Jas. Field, of Sumner, was ■15 years of age, and bad been a resident of Wanganui for about twenty-two years, during the last fifteen of which he had been one of the heads of the Wanganui Supply and Ageacy Company. IFo is survived by a widow, one son, and four danghtevs. At a complimentary '/social" to Mr. M. Dennehy, secretary of the Wanganui branch of the Railway Officers' Institute, that gentleman was the recipient of a presentation, subscribed for by members throughout the whole district in recognition of his service on behalf of the institute, particularly in connection with the petition placed before Parliament last rear. Replying to the toast of "Parliament," Mr. W. A. Veitch, M.P., who was one of the guests, impressed the members with the need of cohesion to obtain tho objects they had in view. He said he could not forecast the way affairs would trend when Parliament met, but he hoped they would be in the interests of the workers, who knew what they wanted and were determined to have it. Ample confirmation of the awakening of the giant Labour was to be found every day in tho cable items of the newspapers. The awakening at present was taking a rather drastic form, but they must remember that the true solution of tho problems lay in evolution, not revolution.
