A SURVEY UNDER DIFFICULTIES. (By TeleirraDh.-Press Association.] Auckland, February S. The cable.survoy stramer Iris arrived in the stream this morning from Sydney. On January 0 tho Iris left Auckland to undertake, a survey of the route for thy «ihlo which, it is proposed (o lay between (he Mnnukau and Bohdi (near Sydney). Captain Sharps, in speaking of the work to a reporter this morning, said that tho survey had to some extent been interfered with by tho boisterous weather met with off the New Zealand coast, the big seas making it impossible at times to take soundings. As the conditions became More, favourable, however, the operations Were carried out expeditiausly. The greatest, depth registered was 27(ifl fathoms, and the least SGO fathoms, the latter lieiiift at a point midway between tho Australian and Xew Zealand roost. Captain Sharpo is of opinion that this marks the position of one of th,e mountains of n vanpp tho ocean VM which is tlihnsrlit to exist in a direct line between Nelson and Lord Howe Island.
