NOTES AND COMMENTS,
[Br Qtrxcos.] Specialform, who scored in tlio Filly Stakes at the C.J.C. meeting, is tho first of _ the progeny of Bonifonn to win in this oountry, but Chin Chin, by the same sire, won a raco at Brisbane last month. - The success of Mumurn in tho Midsummer Handicap at Riccarton on Thursday draws pointed attention to tho stock of St. Ambrose, who have been winning all alon',' the line of late. Odessa, Sea Queen, St. Felix, Mallard, and Sinapis aro all by the same sire. In only being raised a stone (and the distance a quartor of a mile less) Mumura has not been harshly dealt with in tlip St. Albans Handicap to-day. The remainder of the field, except Parable, have all been raised, so that Mr. Knight's horso cannot bo soid to have any the worst of the weights, when the manner of his winning is taken into account,
R. Hatch will ride Colleen Marv in tho Linwood Welter at Hiccarton to-cioy. The San Fran mare was a runner in tho Craven Plate on Thursday, but got anything but a good passage.
A well-known Ashburton owner, who generally a horse or > two x for tho West Coast trip, is negotiating for tho purchaso of Bally Shannon. Mr. G. Humo's gelding shonld fill tho bill admirably as ai West Coast proposition.
With tho final payments poated_ there aro only five two-year-«lds left in the Middle Park Plate, which looks liko being a match between Canuto and the Cliokebore pair. The other two startersBon Ton and Ngatnpa--will represent Messrs. Stead Bros, and Mr. J. B. Reid respectively, but their chances need not be laboriously considered. At Hiccarton to-day the TreadmillGlenowlct filly, v Brown Owl, who is the possessor of a great private ropntation, will appear in the Richmond Plate. The filly ran twice during the C.J.C. Cup meeting, but she is still a maiden performer.
Manitan, a dual winner at Gisborne, was formerly in tho stablcs_ of J. Hennail, at Napier, who held him on lease, but returned him to his breeder, Hr. A. F. Douglas. Tho,latter gave him to J. M. Cameron to train, and tliis is tho first meeting at which ho has sported silk this season.
By winning the Hurdles at Gisborno yesterday, with ]3st. 101b. on his back, Continuance put up a really good performance, though, of conrsc, thcro was nothing of any note in tho field behind liim. W. Young rodo liim on both (lays. Passengers by the outward Sydney boat yesterday included Mr. J. P. Buchanan, the well-known southern sportsman, who has gono on a trip to EnKatul. Prior to leaving Christchurch on Ilmrsday he had the satisfaction of seeing his colours carried to victory by Thmx in tho Halswcll AVelter Handicap alio winner-was bred by his owner, and is ono of the Martian tribe. It is stated that all is not well with Bellah, and ninco arriving at Eiccarton, Jlr. 1 . A. Horman's recent purchase has not been 011 tho tracks
, Hie Judder colt which Mr. Higliden purchased nt tho Novemlier sale of yearhngs at Chnstchurch is still giving a lot of trouble with liis fractured L which, so fur, lias not set. It will bo some time before tho colt can be sent to Awapitm.
Acceptances for the first day's events at the laranaki Jockey Club's meeting closo oil Monday next. '
The Egmont Racing Club's meeting opens at Hawora oil Wednesday next. The Achilles—Kitehenmaid colt, purchased by Mr. C. Morse at tho Waikanao wile, has been turned out at Feilding. Backers investing an equal amount, on H. Gray's i mounts at tho recent Takapuna meeting would have shown over 100 per cent, profit. Followers of B. Dcclcy's mounts would also liavo shown a good profit.
Dazzle (dain of California), who has been on a visit to San Fran, was shipped homo to Gisborno from Napiex on Tuesday last.
Arohakan, who was among tho winners at the recent Wairoa meeting, is a halfsister, by San Fran, to Kuatamata, who has been ft frequent winner in tho pony ranks in Sydney.
According to an Auckland writer, ono of the finest-looking youngsters seen out this season is Potou, who is by Monoform —Black Watch, and consequently a lmlfbrother to Waucliopo and Ilohungatahi. I'otoa rnn very green in two races, but when lie acquires experienco will probably make a different showing.
Prior to leaving tho saddling- paddock to contest the Kangitoto Handicap at Trtkapuiia on Monday (says the "Star"), Watch Clin in hit out and caught his trainer, Geo. Absolom, on tho arm, but fortunately. although tho latter was knocked down, he did not pet the Full force of tho kick. Watch Chain was also in the wars himself, for, whilo being brought into tho birdcato, ho struck tho
flido of the gato, smashing tlio beading ou tho gate and knocking a bit of skin olt his hip. In tlio raco lor which lie was sent out favourite tli« son of Cuirassier was never prominent, and another disappointing performanco has to bo recorded against him.
