LORD STANMORE. Br Telejrraph-Prcss Associatlon-Oopyrleht London, January 30. The death is announced of Lord Staamore.
The late Lord Stanmore, better known to New Zealanders as Sir Arthur Gordon, was the fourth son of the- fourth Earl of Aberdeen, and was born in 1829. 110 entered thq House of<Commons as Liberal momber for Beverley in 1851. He acted as secretary of Mr. Gladstone's mission to Corfu in 1858, and three years later was niado Governor of New Brunswick. He was subsequently Governor of Trinidnd from 18CG, Mauritius from 1871, Fiji from 1875, and New Zealand from ISBO to 1882, holding this position whilo ho was still High Commissioner for the Western Pacific. From 1883 to 1902 ho was Governor of Ceylon. He was made a Peer by Mr. Gladstone in 1893. He was chairman of the Bank of Mauritius and several colonial development companies. SIR J. C. DALRYMPLE HAT. London, January 30. Admiral Sir J. C. Dalrymple Hay is dead. Sir John Hay was born in .1821, and joined the Royal Navy in 1831, served during the first Kaffir War, on the coast of Africa and Cape stations; Pacific and South American stations, 183(i-39; Mediterranean station, 1839-12; and was pre,'pnt at the capture of Bevront and St. Jean d'Acre; the Ka-st India and China station, 1842-50; flag-lieutenunt to Admiral Sir Thomas Cochrane in the Borneo operations of 1843. He commanded the Victory, 185-1, Hannibal in the Black Sea during the Russian War. Rear-admiral in lSlili, vice-admiral 1872, admiral 1878. He was M.P. for Wakefield, 1802-65; Stamford, 18GU-80, and Wigtown Burgh?, 188085.
