A function which attracted at least 400 people to Makarcwa to-day was the opening of the Southland Frozen Meat Company's new meat works ttiere. The works are probably the most up-to-date fn tho Dominion, and cost over X 30,000. Tho company possesses 500 acres of freehold, which it proposes to enrich as a farm with fertilising agencies from tho works. Jlr. J. C. Thomson, M.P., in tho couree of a speech, urged shareholders to retain their shares, as ho foresaw tho introduction of American methods into New Zea.land, «nd he warned those present that if tho capital of such institutions got into the hands of one group they would haw producers at their mercy.
