M'Shcrry i was ordered to be. sent to an industrial school, and Pearson is to como up for sentence on Saturday.—On the same day Leonard Robinson, convicted of receiving tho stolen property, will also he sentenced.—Edward John Thoroau was fined 10s. and costs for shooting a tame duck belonging to a Fitzherbert East settler. He was also ordered to pay the value of tho duck. Two. others who were in company with the defendant were let off. i'or having unstamped scales in his possession, B. Just was fined- 10s. and costs.—Several residents were fined for breaches of tho by-laws.—A uian named Jas. Fitzgerald, charged with assault and robebry at Shannon, was romauded till Wednesday. Palmerston, January 30. A rather interesting case was "heard at the S.M. Court yesterday, when two hotel employees named John Barras and Joseph Kcllehcr were prosecuted by the Inspector of Awards for a breach o'f the hotel workers' award, in not becoming members of tho.union. The defendants stated they did not wish to join tho union, and were prepared to give up their billets as soon as anyone came along to take them. They would rather take on other work than join the union. Counsel for defendants said the case opened up an important' matter. The clause under which they were prosecuted was not a preferential one,. but compulsory, and it. was a question whether anyone, had the right lo'conipulsorily deprive an- employee of his livelihood. Judgment was reserved. The monthly meeting of tho executive of the Chamber of Commerce was held last night, the president, Mr. M. A. Eliott being in the chair. Mr. C. Louisson was appointed an associate member with a seai on the executive. The Mayor mentioned the matter of having an addition made to the Railway Bridge at Longbum, so as to make, it avaliablo also for road traffic. It was understood the bridge would shortly • have to be strengthened, and that would be a good opportunity to get the alterations made. The settlers in the Linton district were moving in the matter, and he thought the chamber should strengthen their hands. It was decided to support the Mayor in the matter. The question of a motor bus service between Palmerston and Rongotea was discussed at length, and it was finally left in the hands of the president to obtain information, on tho question to submit to the nest meeting, of the chamber. It<was decided td support, the Borough Council when waiting on the ■ Minister for Railways'to endeavour'to get something dono to reduce the risk, to life. at. the dangerous railway crossings in .the Square. Tho-mat-ters of forwarding goods to small Tailway -stations and the' facilities for obtaining tickets at .tjie Palmerston railway station, more particularly •on holidays, were discussed, and it was resolved to interview tho stationmasfcer. on the subject. The. necessity for a "new railway station also. carao in for discussion, and it was left over till Parliament met, when the question will be brought, before tie Minister for Railways. ' ■ The local Court of Foresters . met last night. ! Bro. A. Levy, C.R., .'presiding. The Woodwards reported' that a large mimlier of mombers were on the sick list. One new member was admitted by clearance. It was decided to bring forward a scheme for raising a sufficient sum'by levy among the friendly societies to pay the 'hospital charges for members who enter the hospital, and to bring the matter before the Friendly Societies , Council at an early date. The annual picnic in connection with t.lm Terrace End School will bo held at Plinimorton next Friday. Mr. .T. Robertson. M.P. for Otaki. is about, to take up his residence in Tievin. Captain Haydon, n member of the Borough Council and an ex-Mavor of the town, takes a trip to England in April next.
