EDUCATION BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING, The monthly meeting of the Wellington Kdncatiou Board was held yesterday, there being present thu chairman (Mr". Robt. I-ot). and Messrs. J. Kebbell, A. H. , Vile. •{• <■'• W. Aitken, W. Freeman, A. \\. "ogg, Wm. Allan, W. 11. Field, and W. C Buchanan, M.l'. The financial statement for the month ended Januarv 2G disclosed a debit balance of ,fl7'JI 12s. 8(1., as against a credit balance of .£llO7 19s. .'ld. shown in the statement for the period ended December ■o last. Tlie chairman explained that since the statement had been made up the. Government had paid in a grant of .J. 2025, so that the actual position of nftairs was that, the finances were in credit to the amount of JE374. Tho board had had to face considerable outlay during the month, a≤ there were a number of contracts under way for new school-, and alterations, and progTcs* payments had been mado. The resignations of the following teachers were accepted:—Mr. H. Davie (Cconoor), Miss U. Hanron (Johnsonvillo), Miss L. Mackellar (Maranui), Mr. Grant (I'c Aharau). The inspectors were instructed to report upon the merits of a petition for the erection of a. school at Tawa. A letter from the Education Department conveyed intimation that the Minister for Education had approved of the establishment of a district high school at Eketahunn. An application f.or the establishment of a district high school at Johnsonvillc was referred back to the school authorities for detailed information in support of the application. In consequence of irregularity in attendance, the free place of a junior board scholar was cancelled, and his scholarship forfeited. A list of students admitted to the Training College was tabled and approved. The list has already been published in The Dominion', with the exception of the following names, since added:— Edith A. Norman, Taranaki; Gordon J. I Calmon, Wanganni; William T. M'Cnw, I Wellington; and Wilhelmiua Smylie, Wel- , lingtoii. Further names will be added when the results of tho teachers' certificate examinations are announced next month. Mr. Robert Parker was reappointpd instructor in singing for tho teachers' training classes. It was resolved, with regard to the following sites:—Section 26. Block 111, Puketoi—To bo offered to Mr. J. M. Morris for lease for ten years at tho amount of lender; Section 5, Block X, Mangahao—To be offered to Mr. .1. Elliott for lease for a period of ten years, at the amount of tender; Matahiwi—Offer to be referred to Board Committee; Plimnierton —Exceiitiou of lease approved. Grants for school works and supplies were approved a? follow:—Greytown (new spouting to residence); Clareville (cupboards .EG, shelter shed ,£2O, extension of latrines i! 7 10s., repairs, etc., i:5); Island I Bay (new spouting); Karori (boarded fence, Donald Street); Tokomaru (residence, relaying pipes); Northland (repairs fencing) ; Hutt Inf. (netting, high windows); Maranui (storeroom); Johnsonville (shelter shed); South Wellington (introducI tion of gas into library). It was also decided, with regard to the following schools:—Hutt: That the board ■ pav half cost of improvements; Kilbirnie —That tho asphalting and grading of ; I ground be completed, and that pedestal I be supplied; Mungaroa (application for j iucroased accommodation, school and residence)— That application be referred to 'tho iuspectors for report; Masterton— , Lhat arrangement with contractor be ap- . proved. The following tenders were accepted — • Overhaul of Mangataiuoka School, aiid alterations to the rcsidence-C. Clifton, Pahiatua;.. residence at Clareville—T. S • Arcus and Sons.
