NOTES AND COMMENTS,

[BT Glznooi.] Acceptances for the Te Kuiti Racing Club's- meeting close to-morrow. There will bo racing at Gisborne. on Thursday and Friday next. Mr. E. J. Watt's brilliant two-year-old Ventura has resumed training at Bandwick. The.consistent Electrakoff was again on hand yesterday when, carrying Sst. 121b. ho suffered defeat by Gloy, to whom he was conceding 301bs. The winner has a great private reputation in Auckland, and was; for a time, one of the well-fan--cied division in the Railway Handicap at the Auckland-Cup. meeting. • . Owing, however, to striking himself ; a -couple, of days before the race he-had to -be withdrawn. - ■■■■ • Monoline, who won tho two-yeaf-old handicap at Takapuia yesterday, certainly looked the best of good things on paper. In all her races Mr. J. Thompson's filly has shown herself remarkably smart up to four furlongs. In the .handicap, -won 'by ,'L'adyLGeorgia,,-i!t'.Er;ersli(\ ; .: the chestnut was as good as the winner for half a ..mile and, on this form, she oertainty seSniwfcsa Uwinuer when compared with the;weak' field''which, opposed her yesterday. Prior to returning to Melbourne Mr. T. M'Grath endeavoured to .purchase Sir Knos, but the price asked lor the colt was considered too high. Nominations''f<if . the Dannevirke' Racing Club's meeting close on February 10. '' Tho Auckland nominations for the Wa,nganui..Gup number half a dozen, which is the largest from that end of the island for some years. Santa Bosa, Waimangu Domino, Maxwell, Spectre, and Tiresome appear in the list. Weights for the Egmont Racing Club's meeting are duo to-day. Sir George Clifford's filly Counterfeit has registered so many brilliant performances this season that it will be interesting to see what .impost she. will be-al- : ■lotted in the..'iWanga.iiui. Cup. ,Tlio .-.highest weight^yet j 'ca.rrie<l. to.-.victory rby -<r three-year-old jii\ Bst.- lllb.,; '.wbich-.'.-weiglit Nonette triumphed:'with in 1902.. R. Hatch. left for the South last .evening to. fulfil riding engagements at the C.J.C.''Midsummer ■ meeting. Amongst his mounts are Kilts, Armstrong, and Sea King. Weights for the Dunedin Cup arc due on'.-. Monday next. '. The New Zealand Cup winner, Bridge who has been a a ,complete failure since ■racing in Australia, is now ■ undergoing a spell at Randwick. It is stated that." when' next he begins work, it will be at Caulfield. under the. care of 1). .I.' Price, who will prepare him for National honours. That good performer, Alawa, who has just completed a season at the stud, has against comnicnced training at Caulfield and may bo given a run in the weight-for-ag« events at the Australian Cup meeting. In these races, his opponents will include Trafalgar and Comedy King. ■ A. Gray, . late of the .Karamu stable, has been given .Lady Moutoa and the other members, of Sir. F. S. Easton's team to train at Foxton. ' ; Tho black stallion, Contorp, who raced with a fair amount of sucoess Over hurdles in Sydney, is now doing stud duty in Brisbane. It was recently stated that'the ex-New Zealand performer William (Conqueror— Morezo) had been sold at Melbourne to an Adelaide buyer. The buyer, however, did not appear to take delivery, and Mr. L. Robertson', of trotting fame, was therefore obliged to hold Him. It turned out well that he did so, for going out at a good price at Aspendale recently, the ex-Porirua gelding won the principal handicap. , ! Writing of the racing at Caulfield on January 20, the Melbourne correspondent of the Sydney "Referee" says that, in tho Anniversary : Handicap, Jlerrie Zealand was evidently expected to repeat the Gunboat coup at the previous meeting, as ho was backed like a certainty from-the, moment the betting opened. Towards the close of- operations there was a . run on'lndiscreet,.and as Francis also had. some support, Merrie Zealand - cased a little. Jlerrie Zealand.- however, made no sort of a show in- the race. He was among tho tail division, when t-hey jumped off, and he did not show; any dash in the'race, ultimately finishing some distance behind tho leaders and out of a place. It could hardly have been his form, and it is possible Cairns was feeling the effects of his fall in the Hurdle Race, and .could not do him justice. Anyhow, tho form could not have been rtt all correct, as he must have bwn doing well in private for his connections to back him- as they. did. As a rnle. owners do not back horses unless there is a very good reason for doing so. One of tho most prominent of New South Wales breeders and respected sportsmen, in the person of the Hon. Geo. Lee. M.L.C., of Leehnlme, Kelso, Hathurst, passed nwav on .Tannary 23, at the age of 77. Deceased was prominent among breeders in the State, and lor several seasons his stock tonped the irarket at the Randwick yearling sales. TTe was successful on the turf as an owner, winning, among other imnortant races, the Marib.vrnong Plate with Yarran. and the V..A.T.C. Debutant Stakes v-ith Wigebnar. From the Leeholmo Stud the New South Wales turf received Mich flue performers as Etra Weenie (who'won the Mnribyrnong Plate and V.If.C. Oaks), Diflidonce (winner of Sydney Cup), Mcrriwee (winner of V.R.C. Derby and Melbourne CupJ, Wilari (winner of V.R.C. Derby), Master Foote, Gidgiel, Wai-ila, Cleis," Lady Joan, and numerous ather important winners. Mr. Lee had been in ill-hoalth for several months. According to the "Southland Times," tbo ex-North Island horse Swimming Belt -displayed savago propensities in rather an alarming manner tho other morning. It appears that Townson (Swimming Belt) and G. Cameron (Bold Venture) wore rid-

ing back to town after exorcise at the Southland Racing Club's course, when the unruly son of Captain Webb, despito being decorated with a muzzle, suddenly dashed at Cameron and dragged him from the saddle by the leg. Swimming Bolt got down to Cameron, despito the frantic efforts of Townson to stay liiui. and tore some of his clothing away. Camerou's leg was painfully injured before he could escape, ami 111 consequence ho was compelled to forgo a visit to tho Goro meeting, Meanwhile Bold Venture had galloped off and fears were expressed that ho would damage himself, as on a previous occasion when ho got free. Eventually the son of Caurobert was discovered in a vacant section, quietly cropping the grass, and Cameron got him homo in safety. Tho determinea nature of the 6tallion's attack can bo realised "when it is explained that ho had to reach up, owing to Bold Venture l>eing a much bigger horse, and drag the ridor to earth with a light muzzle on.
