NEW CABLE TO SYDNEY.
SURVEY OF THE ROUTE,
The cable steamer Iris reached Port ".la'ekion last Pundny weffcf fronr* New Zealand. Tho Iris has been'engaged sur; voying the route for a new cable, tho scheme being to link up Auckland andSydney by a dual cable, which will have operative-terminals at tho post office of each city. Practically nothing is known about the topography of the ocean bed between Auckland and Sydney, and.tho Iris officers arc to furnish a chart. When that is done, the cable will bo laid from Bondi to a point A short distance to the north of Jlanukau Harbour (N.Z.), along the bed of a creek to within a short distanco of Riverhead, across to tho Waitemata Harbour by means of a trench, and will, then bo brought aslioro against Ponsonby Reef. From there it will bo brought in a conduit to the chief post office at Auckland.
On her trip across tho Iris had to contend with heavy weather during the last week, and she was hovo-to for two days. Strong currents wero also mot.
