A resident of Jerusalem, writing in , the "Hibbert Journal," describes the monks of that city, whoso numbers have been greatly augmented since thoir, expulsion from France, as slothful and unscrupulous. He specially instances those Attached to the (Greek) Church of the Holv Sepulchre, to which crowds of pilgrims come. The pilgrims pay for masses, writing their names on slips of paper.
