Irviug) wears some quaintly lovely old world gowns, designed by herself, and carried out in Liberty art fabrics. In the earlier scenes Ophelia appears in a graceful trained robe of maize-coloured brocade, the long, hanging sleeves lined v.-ith soft' greenish" blue silk, and the sfiuarpcut corsage outlined with green ami blue gonis. A girdlo and long neck-chain of green nnd blue jewels is also worn, nnd a badeau of blue encircles her beautiful fair hair, which falls in two long plaits. Iu tho famous "mad scene," Miss Baird displays a most welcome originality in departing from tho conventional white robe, her clinging draperies of smoke grey diaphanous crepe, with their uiiderrobo of opalescent silk, being exquisitely simple and artistic (like her acting of this scene). Ophelia's hair is unbound, and entwined with white flowers. Amongst the largo audience present one noticed Mrs. Godley in grey iiinou, with moonlight blue embroideries; Mrs. Stolt in ceriso crepe, embroidered with sleel; Mrs T. G. Mucarthy in n gown of fuschia blue ninon, over flame-coloured silk, with Oriental embroideries of gold; Dr. and Mrs. M'Artlmr. Mrs. H. D. Bell, Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Xieholls, Miss Newton, Mr. and Mrs. Sievwright, Mr. and Mrs. P. Freeth, Dr. and Miss Purdy, and Mr. A. L. Herdman, M.P. There.was the customary amount of. annoyance owing to late arrivals, some of tho audience not getting seated till nearly the end of the first act. It seems, alas, that even "Hamlet" and Mr. H. B. Irving cannot induce punctuality. Y.M.C.A. Garden Party. The garden fete, in aid of the Y.M.C.A. funds, which took place on Saturday afternoon in the grounds of Mrs. Keene, at Island Bay, was favoured with beautiful w.cather, and was most successful.
