FERRY AGREEMENT.
ITS PRINCIPAL FEATURES. ' The full tort of tho agreement botweun the Harbour Ferries Company and its employees was not obtainable yesterday, but from a reliable source it was learned that the agreement provides (or au increase of ss. per week for each mau in resppct of ordinary time. Additional payment for overtime work will make the total increase granted amount to from 10s. to 12s. per week-for each man. Tho rate of overtime to be paid between the hours of 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. is 2s. per hour. Other overtime work will bo paid • for at the rate of Is. 3d per hour. Provision has been made for three meal hours and lor a weekly day of rest, not necessarily on Rundaj. Tho agreement is to hold good for one year from the date of signing. In order to meet the terms of the agreement in regard to working hours, the Ferries Company will have to add one complete crew to its present 6talf of deck-hands and firemen. A clause has been inserted in the agreement providing that the manager of tho company and the secretary of the Wharf Labourers' Union (Mr. Farland) shall mutually confer and settle any dispute that may arise. Mr. G. G. Farland, secretary of the Wellington Wharf Labourers' Union, who has acted throughout on behalf of tho ferry employees, considers that tho agreement represents a fairly satisfactory settlement obtained under very difficult circumstances. The men recognised, lie said, that with the present volume of trade tho Ferries Company could not emplrfy throe shifts of men, bnt, as the trade increased, tho men would naturally look for a corresponding increase of wages and reduction in working hours.
