AUCKLAND BOWLEGS IN TOWN

Six rinks of Auckland bowlers arrived from the south by the Maori at an early hour yesterday morning, and like all good bowlers they soon found their way to ths green set asido for their pleasure. '1 his was. the Victoria green, which nestles among the houses on the sunny sitle of Mount Victoria. There they met with a cordial welcome from Mr. John tfinith, Acting-Mayor of Wellington, Mr. Jns. Keith, president of the Northern j Bowling Association; Mr. C. Bary (who was ih charge of the arrangements for the day), and a group of bowlers from the clubs of tho southern and eastern parts of tho city. In welcoming the visitors, Mr. John Smith said he was very pleased to welcome the bowlers from Auckland, believing that the visits of citizens from one part to other places tended to cement the unity of tho Dominion. They knew in the past there had been certain jealousies between Auckland and Wellington, but thos6 had been entirely removed. (Eear, hear.) He hoped they would haVo a good time in Wellington, and wished them success in their matches. Mr. Keith welcomed the visitors on behalf of the Northern Bowling Association and the city and suburban clubs. He hoped that that gathering would tend towards the unification of bowling throughout the Dominion. (Applause.) Mr. B. T. Michaels, speaking on behalf of the Auckland visitors, said they knew they were going to they had all through the tour—a good time in Wellington. They were not out to win trophies, but simply in scarch of a plea/sant time. Among their number, too, were several members of Auckland local bodies, and they were getting' ideas in regard to matters that might be of use to them in tho conduct of public affairs. (Applause.) The visitors gave three cheers for tho Wellington bowlers, and sang the old familiar verse "There's a Little White .Tack at the End of the Green" and "We Want Everybody Happy," which gave a happy musical touch to tho little funcThe following are the results of _ the morning games, played against rinks from the Te Hiwi, Hataitai, and Victoria Clubs:— ■ Auckland-Atkins, Thompson, Brydon, Ash ton (s.). Tho Auckland bowlers wero entertained at a smoko concert last evening in tho Wellington Club's pavilion. Fraternal greetings were interchanged in tho happiost manner. Mr. J. S. Keith (president of tho Northern Bowling Association) spoko on the subject of the proposed Dominion Bowling Association, and dwelt on tho favour with which the proposal had been received by the Auckland bowlere engaged here in the recent tournament, who unanimously passed a motion which expressed tho opinion that such an association would be in tho best interests of bowling in New Zealand. Mr. Brjrden (Auckland) said that they had ascertained during their tour of the south that Cliristchurch and wero in favour of the new association, but Duncdin was against it. Mr. Bankin (Auckland) also spoke. The harmony of tho evening was contributed to by Messrs. L. Cohen, E. J. Hill, B. Gardiner, H. N. Fletcher, A. W. Newton, Geo. Parsons, and Marcus Marks. TO-DAY'S PLAY. This morning the Auckland bowlers will meet rinks from the Kelburne, Karon and Thorndon Clubs, on the last-named club's green, and this afternoon will meet tho Wellington Club on its own groen. The visitors will leave for Palmerston North on Monday morning. SWIMMING. THE WELLINGTON CLUB. The' Wellington Amateur Swimming Club decided the final for the President's Cup (150 yards) at the Te Aro Baths last evening. The results were as follow:— W. G. Morpeth (25sec.), 1; D. Martin (Msec.), 2; B. Grimmett (21sec.), 3. Also started: A. Farnel (30sec.), E. R. Scott (28sec.), S. Murrell (ssec.). Time, 2min. 4 2-sscc. Tho result of the race makes Grimmett and MaTtin a tie for the cup. The race to decide who is to take tho cup will be held at a date to bo arranged later. | OLD BOYS' CLUB.
