A strong deputation from the Marantii Surt Club, including a number of ladies, waited upon (lie Cily Council last evening to ask for official recognition. Jlr. Ci. S. Hill aefed as spokesman. Jlr. 3IiII stated that in the month of November last the Maranui Surf Club had asked the council to give it a joint control of the Lyall Hay bsaeli with the Lvall iiay Surf Club. The coun.'il had replied that it could not see its way to grant, the wi'k'st. The Jlni-anui Club now asked the council, to reconsider this decision, and to recognise the club as a body necessary for the protcclim of human life on the beach, and for the exercise of a proper control. The clul. proposed to ask the council lo ereet a building, but the club would find .£-10 cr .£sll towards the cost. The club numbered 220, including a number of Indies. During the last three months, its members had saved two lives. It had supplied three out of the four examiners in (he recent life-savin;; examination* arranged by Jlr. J. Henry, of the ]?oy.il Life-saving .Society. It' was essential that there should bo more lifesavers. The Acting-Mayor said that the Reserves Committee would take the request, of the deputation into consideration. Hitherto it had been considered that dual control was undesirable, but possibly the request advanced by the deputation would be granted. The matter was subsequently -referred !o the Baths and City Reserves Committee.
