Heavy weather was encountered by Uic Now Zealand Shipping Co.'s steamer lvaipara whilst crossing tho Tasman Sea on the run out from London to Dunedui, where she arrived on January 23. After passing Cape Lceuwin, fine weather was experienced until Sunday evening, January 21, when the Kaipara ran into a heavy northerly gale, with very thick weather. Tho gale increased in fury, and on Monday a very high and dangerous sea was running, huge seas breaking over the vessel continuously, drenchin? tho officers on the bridgc-4!ft. above the water line. One huge sea smashed the gangway and rendered it useloss, and another, ptovo in the portholes and deluged the cabin and officers' quarters, and throe large lifeboats were unshipped from their davits and badly strained. A good, deal of minor damage was done, but fortunately nothing serious happened, although at times Captain Cornwall had to heave the vessel to in order to case her. Land was sighted on Holiday evening, and nearing Bluif the weather moderated and continued fine until arrival.
