MASTERTON NOTES.

A triangular rifle shooting match, wae fired at Alfrodten on Saturday between teams representing the Alfrodton, Manriccville, and Tararua Clubs. The match was' won by Alfredton with an aggregate scoro of 717, Mauriceville being eocond. with GB3, and Tararua scoring 661. Mr. Archibald Fraser, an old 6etUeE of Clivc, Hawke'a Bay, but a rosident horo for the past few years, died tun morning at the age of 72. Ho leaves a widow, five daughters, and two sons. A successful sports gathering was held at Gladstone to-day, a number of Masterton pedestrians being among tie competitors. Masterton, January 24., A monster park feto is to. bo hold here on February 1. The Hon. D. Buddo (Min. ister for Internal Affairs) will be ptfscnfc axid officially open ' tho Coronation Hall, which was recently erected in tho park. Rabbit poisoning will be commenced u» this district in the course of a few days. A good deal of cocksfoot grass-pced it being saved in this district this year. The lawn tennis tournament, which hat been held in beautifullv fine Weather, concluded hero to-day. Most of the. visiting plnycrs have returned to their homes. Mr. W. A. Veitch, M.P.. of Waugauui, and Mr. D. M'Lnrcn, of Wollington, addressed a public meeting in (ho Town Jlall this evening, under the auspices of the Labour party. Mr. Joseph J. Guest, formerly of this district, who has been for some year* in charge of the school at. Chatham Islands, lias returned to New Zealand. ' Mr. G. Nicholas, of tho Woodvillo Post Office staff, has been transferred to Masterton. Tho death occurred last evening, at th» ago of forty-four, of Mr. John Mitchell, for somo years storeman for Messrs. Dal-gel-y and Co. ■ . Messrs. Macintosh and Co. held them opening stock sale in the\W.aipmin. sale, yards to-day, when there was a good entry 'of stock, arid a large attendance of buyers.
