CABLE STEAMER'S SURVEY. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copjright (Rec. January 25, 0.5 a.m.) Sydney, January 24. The greatest depth obtained by the cable steamer Iris in the survey for the new cable between Australia and New Zealand was 2700 fathoms. Tho soundings were, taken at. intervals of twenty miles in zig-zag direction. The bottom temperatures proved normal. Samples of the sea bottom showed that it consisted mostly of globigerina ooze.
