In 18(58 he drovo the first mob of sheep, which numbered 2000, overland from Hawkc's Bay to the. Opou Station, in Poverty .Bay, in three weeks, with little loss. The country was then in a very rough state. At the. time of the Poverty Bay massacre Mr. Ferguson endured 'many hardships, losing alme.-f, everything he had, as well as having his brother murdered by the Jlauhniis. Walsh, of t.hfl Railway Department, returned by the Moeraki yesterday morning from au extensive tour of the Australian Commonwealth. Mr. W. h. Bosschart, Consul-General for the Netherlands in Australia and New Zealand, is visiting Auckland. Mr. Bosschart's headquarters are at Melbourne, and this is his first visit to New Zealand. He ha.s already been to Wellington, and he leaves Auckland to-morrow for ](otorua. thence proceeding to Christehurch and Ihincdin. Mr. James Edmiston, a very old and esteemed resident of Auckland, died at his residence in Wood Street, Ponsonby, on Monday. The deceased gentleman, who was in his 81th year, was born at Paisley, and came out to New Zealand about 50 years ago. At the time of his death lie 'was one of Auckland's oldest bowlers. The deceased was a member of (ho St. Andrew's Society. The Rev. Mr. Fancourt will be fnrcwclled and the Rev. C. Maclaverty (late of Martinborough) will be welcomed at a social to be held at St. Hilda's Churchroom this evening. The Itev. Mr. Bond, late of St. Thomas's, has taken up his new charge at Mnriinborough. Major-General A. J. Godley, C.B. (commanding tho New Zealand forces), accompanied by his Stnff-Olhcer (Captain D. C. left on an official visit to Auckland yesterday. Bishop Nevill, Primate of New Zealand, accompanied by Mrs. Nevill, returned from a visit to the Old Country by the Taintii yesterday. Major Cadell, A.D.C. to General Sir Tlarr.v Barron, Governor of Tasmania, was a passenger from Hobart to Wellington by the Tainui yesterday. Mr. A. Ferguson, Wellington, was a passenger from Cape Town to Wellington bv the Tainui. Mr. 1!. H. IxMiuuon, of Wellington, also returned yesterday. Mr. Jack Arn-t, brother nf Kiehard Arni-I, world's champion sculler, arrived in Wellington from London yesterday. Mr. V. J. Sholton, of Gisbonie, arrived from London by the Tainui from Homp. Professor Coleridge Farr, of Christchurch, who has been for a trip round the world, returned to Now Zealand by tho Moeraki yesterday mnniLnff and loft far the south last evening.

The death occurred at noon yesterday of Mr. Sidney Brown, of tho firm of Thomson and Brown, land and rebate agents. Customhouse Quay. The deceased had been suffering from an internal complaint for some years, and had been serioiisly indisposed for the past few week's. Mr. Brown, who passed away at his residence in Owen Street, was the sec. end son of tho late Mrs. Klizabcth Brown, formerly of lnge.stro Street, and a grandson of the late Xlr. John Dimmer, of this city. Deceased, who was 3f> years of age, leaves a wifo and two children. Members of the Wellington representative cricket team, who arc to piny Canterbury for the Wunkct Shield, in n match commencing on Friday, left for the south by the Maori Inst evening. The Rev. A. H. Colville, viear-elecl of New Plymouth, accompanied by Mrs. Colville, arrived from London by the Tallin i vcste.rdav. Tho Eovs. J. P. Hampson and'W. 11. 'Williamson were also passengers by the Tainui. Dr. de licnzic, of Dunedin, was' a pnspier Harbour Board, is a visitor to Wellington. Dr. de Rezie, of Dunedin, was a passenger from Sydney by the Moonaki yesterday.
