CRICKET. TIIE IUVAL COLL KG KS. The annual match between Canterbury and Victoria Colleges was commenccd en the Wellington Culloge ground yesterday. The visitors won the to.-* and batted, scoriug 182 alter an indifferent beginning. VietoriaCollcge began very well, reaching the total of 67 before I lie lir.-t wicket fell. In the rest of the innings, however, the success of the liutsnici) was only spa.-modic, and the total was only 136. Canterbury batted out time, scoring 31. runs for ono wicket. The match was a r-plendid example of what fielding means to a sido. In Canterbury's iir.-t innings several catches were dropped, and two of them cost the outs 50 runs. The ground fielding was also only moderate. Even ill the half-hour of play when the visitors were at the wickets iu their second innings three catches were dropped. Canterbury, on the other han'i, fielded brilliantly, so that their rather woak bowling was made very effective, and runs were saved. time and again by smart returning of the ball. At Newtown Park on Saturday, Trinity defeated Telegraph after ah exciting game by 29 runs. Trinity made 69 in their first innings and 61 in their second, Tijyard (28), Grindrod (22), and CiUagh:in (19) being the chief scorers. Telegraph's first innings score was 64, and, requiring 70 runs to win, they commenced their second innings at.6 o'clock, but by half-past six they luid all been dismissed for 11 runs. The Mel bourne correspondent of tin Sydney "Referee" writes as follows:— In his second meeting with Fran] Thorn, at the Melbourne Athletic Club Elliott made a most disappointing (lis play. In bis previous battle with Thorn Elliott- had made such a close issue of i that the decision-of the referee came ii for a lot of adverse comment. The seoonc round had scarcely been entered upoi when Elliott, dropping to one knee, roll ed over on to his back. So he continua until counted out. Just previously when on his legs, with them well apart Thorn delivered a smart punch or two and Elliott fell, declaring he had beet hit low; Dr. Drew examined Elliott, and do clared that it would have been impos sible for a glove to have struck liirr where he pretended. Thorn was declared the winner, and ii was anticipate! that the management would say something in respect to tlx loser's end, but no statement in that direction was made. "BILLY" HANNAN. "Billy" Hannan, the well-behavec young Maitlander, for whom New Zea land will always have a "glad hand," i: sore- at Arthur Douglas agreeing to meel him. and cutting away without sending word while Hannan went on training putting in three weeks altogether (says the "Referee"). Maitland people interested themselves so much in their champion's preparation that when the hat went round in the afternoons'sweet littk amounts were collected for the local hospital. Itannan has bought a tidy-sized farm for himself just outside llaitlnr.d. and has already started to grow chickens, pigs, beans, cabbages, and filing-:.
