MOTOR CAR FATALITY.
t ; (By Telegraph-rPrcss Association.) . ■ Christchurch, Januarj- 20. An inquest was opened to-day into the 1 circumstances surrounding the death of j. Thomas- Ryan, who died at tho hospital last night from the effects of injuries received from a. motor-car running into him in Cathedral Square, about 5 o'clock yesterday evening. The coroner said that the police were • not satisfied that duo care was used in 3 driving th: car, and required time in or- ' der to make further inquiries beforo the '■ whole .matter was placed before a jury. Dr. F. L. Scott, medical superintendent 6 of the hospital, stated that on examination • of dcceaia.l when admitted witness found ' evidence of fracture of the spin© iu the ' lower cervical region. He had" also broken - 1 his lefi ankle. Ryan too?c suddenly wcrso about 8 p.m., his breathing becoming very weak, and he died about 8.15, as the result J of the injuries. ' To the jury: He. saw no signs of liquor • on deceased. t Maurice Buckley Ryan. labourer, of Sydenham, stated that deceased was his s father, and was (ii years of age. He was > in good lunlth and very acti--o for his years. He had been accustomed for many years to be about town and in the midst of traffic.
