THE YACHTS.
ON THE ANNIVERSARY DAY. LIST OF WINNERS. Perfect wrather jirevailed for (lie Anniversary Regatta of (lie Port Xichotam Yacht Qui), which was hsld yesterday. A large in;llll.ci- of ysichU competed, mid trie cutler race between the port and star!>o:il'll watches on llio Amokura created interest. Jn Iho afternoon Jupp's Band flayed, and tea was provided. An easterly breeze prevailed in the morning, blit subsequently chopped round to tic south. The'"southerly" was a little lresh-i-r, and -helped matters nlontj considerably. Jn the afternoon a good fresh "nor'-wester" prevailed, and, naturiiiiy enough, this was welcomed by the yachtsmen. Tne yachts looked their lx>st, and, with every stitch of canvas stretched, they moved out to the starting line. Top-sails, balloon-jibs, jib top-sails, and spinnakers were in evidence on nearly cverv vaelit. In tho afternoon the top-sails weie gTaduaily taken down, as tiie fresh biraw which prevailed was a, little too strong ior top-sails to bo carried on sonic of the yachts. Not at any previous regatta held under the auspices of the Port Nicholson Yacht Club have such small prizes been offered as at that held yesterday, and this naturally gave occasion for remark. The first race got oft' was that for sec-ond-class yachts, commencing at 10 a.m. Iu this event, the Evans Bay packet Patron us started 25 minutes late, and she had not gone far when she drew out of the race. Shortly after the start Amai scoured a lead, and rounded iialswell buoy first, being followed by Taipari, Lizzio, liawene, and Ethel. 'Tho '"i'ai" caught Amai and passed her, establishing a lead of half-mile until oil Koro-Koro, when she was becalincd, Lizzio and Amai then passed Taipari. Amai rounded lie buoy lirst, followed by Taipari and Lizzie, Taipari having passed tho Lizzie again, Taipari then ilrew away from Lizzie and passed Amai, increased Jier lead, and won by about two minutes and a half'. A good muster of yachts'competed in the iirst-class event. Waitangi, from Evans Bay, although starting eighteen minutes late, managed to secure first place with two minutes to spare. Threequarters of an hour after the start tho yachts were in the following positions:— Muritai, Mahina, Windward, Siren, Ailsa, Wairere, Viking, and ' Waitangi. Muritai, and Mahina had all the wind, and were making the pace for Halswoll buoy. Mahina, when near lialswell, overtook Muritai easily, and rounded the buoy about two minutes ahead. Windwaril next secured the breeze, and to move along. Ailsa passed the Siren, and rounded Halswell buoy after "Windward. Meanwhile the "Wai' managed to secure a breeze, and commenced to chaso her rivals at a smart pace. Mahina rounded the Ivoro-Koro buoy first, and maintained her lead until "about halfway across Evans Pay, when the "Wai" came along, and passed her, finishing first. The cutter sailing race between No. 2 cutter, of the Wellington battalion, anil a cutter from the Amokura, was won by the former. In tho foiirteen-footers' race, the Geisha carried off the first prize by about two minutes. In the afternoon races the finish of the first-class race was interesting. Three of the fastest yachts of tho fleet — Waitangi, Ailsa, anil Wairere —were making for the finishing line together, each endeavouring to beat her rival. Eventually Ailsa got a breeze, which sent her the line seventeen seconds ahead of Wairere. Waitangi crossed the lino two seconds after Wairere. The performance of Amai in the sec-ond-class race was a somewhat remarkable one. She finished seven minutes bofore any of Ui<- other contestants iu this race.
