SPANNING THE RUAMAHANGA.
» BIG BRIDGE OPENED. 3 (By Tclegrnjph—l'rcss Association.) I Carterton, January 18. A new ferro-conerete bridge, 7G2 feet ) long, across the Ruamahanga River, be- - tweeu Featherstou and Murtiuborough, t was completed last month at a cost of r X 8835, and opened for traffic to-day by the Minister for Public Works. There was a large attendance. Mr. W. C. Buchanan, M.P., in the course of his speech, stated ) that the bridge was the first structure of the kind in the Dominion. Mrs. A, L. M'Leod, wife of Die chairman of the Featherstou County Council, then cut the ribbon ami Mr. Buchanan's motor-car crossed the bridge. It was then tested by a traction engine and loaded trucks of wool, totalling about 40 tons. When these wero standing on the centro no apparent , movement was detected. 1 The new bridge will, by the request of i' the .South Wairarapa Natives, be known i as Tokatu Moana, meaning "The rock r that stands for ever."
