After disposing of certain matters of routine, the council went into committee on the question of an 1 appointment to the chair of commerce at the college, but no . definite deeisiou was avrived at. A return recently compiled by the clec'tf'ic lighting <i»partment shows' that for the year just closed 2350 lamps had to bo renewed in the city streets, 1550,0f which had been maliciously broken. Dozens of lamps aloiiz the Hutt Road, between- the city and Kaiwarra, are, it is stated, broken annually by passing drivers who delight in picking the globes off with their whips as a test of skill. Small boys in unfrequoned thoroughfares are 'constantly usin gsfreet lamps as ii target for missiles of all descriptions, and frequently the pea ride is used to pick off the expensive Osram lamps when nobody is about to see the damage done. it is estimated that it costs JC.iOO per annum to replace street lamps maliciously destroyed. . In.nttempi.imr to leap a six-foot wall at the Military Hipnodrome at Rome, Lieutenant Charles Frederick Dugclalo was killed recently.
