4 A NATIONAL CALAMITY. By Telegraph-rress Association-Copyright London, January 16. Mr.. P. Smith, K.C., M.P. for the Walton division of Liverpool, writing to "The Times," states that votes to women would be a national calamity of tho first magnitude. A referendum was desirable to help a section of the Liberals who were prepared to faco the difficulty. The Ministry was not inconsistent in advocating a referendum, as it was not a party measure. PROMINENT OPPONENTS. London, January 16. The Right Hons. R. M'Kenna (Home Secretary), J. Pease, C. Hobhouse, J. E. B. Seely, Hon. Hugh St. Loger, Earl Granard, Baron Herschell, and Mr. R. C. Lambert, M.P. for Devon, will also appear on the platform at the meeting of protest against women's suffrage to be held on February 28.
