THAT BOLD, BAD BEAR.

TO BE INCARCERATED IN ZOO. Yesterday afternoon Mr. R, A. Wright and the Rov. J. Crewes, the deputation appointed by tho Wellington Zoological Society to interview Mr. Wirth regarding the bear which caused a great sensation at Christchurch a few days ago, waited on Mr. Wirth at his menagerie. Mr. Wirth told them that he was grateful for the kindly notices his inenagerio had at times received from tho Wellington Zoological Society, and that he was willing to do all ho could to help the promoters of the Zoo in Newtown Park, lie stated that ho was arranging to take away tho lioness ho left at The Zoo when ho was here last time, and to put in its place a beautiful lioness from which some young ones might be expected soon, and that this was being dono on conditions strongly favourable to the city. He said also that ho would like tho bear to l>o placed in tho Wellington Zoo, and would sell it at a price considerably below what some other parties had offered for it. But the louvst he could accept was .£SO. Mr. Crowes says that he feels sure that the first =£25 can be got, and he appeals to citizens to contribute the other ,£25 by Saturday, when tho deputation will again meet Mr. Wirth. Several members of the council of the Zoological Society will to-day have lists for collecting. Each list is signed by Mr, Brown, the secretary, and stamped with the society's stamp. No other list is genuine. Contributions, great or small, will bo thankfully received by the collectors having these lists, or may be sent to .the Rev. J. Crowes, president of the Wellington Zoological Society, 33 Willis Street, or 90 Owen Street; to Mr. Brown, secretary of the society, Coromandel Street; or to Mr. J. Castle, chemist, the treasurer of the socictr, Kiddiford Street. Messrs, Wright and Crewes arc so confident that citizens will rise to the occasion that tho City Council will proceed to have accommodation ready for tho bear on Saturday.
