NOTES AND COMMENTS. TRACK GALLOPS AT TRENTHAM. [Bi Glencoj.] ft black-looking morning at J/rentham yesterday, and consequently most of the trainers slept in. Track work did not commence until after 5 a.m. Gay Lawless (F. Porter) was first out, and she traversed a circuit on the tan at an easy gait. The black maro looks, well, but did not s©om to move freely. Dearest, 'after being led a couple of rounds on the tan track, was then mounted by H. Telford, and galloped throe furlongs down the back of the courso on the grass. She moved freely and well. J. Lowe- worked Massilia and' Kffort on the tan, but Obligant was sent a half milo ou tho grass,- which.lid got to the end of infjOscc. Masterpiece was worked steadily on tho grass. The big colt is a:lazy worker, arid Emerson was kicking liim along tho whole way. Scottish Star strode freely over a circuit at half pace. v Negative, who- looks well, and Undecided went seven furlongs in a tick under liuin. 30scc. The former won easily, but Undecided was not asked to do his best, and, furthermore, was carrying heavy irons on his feet. The two-year-old Stepney trotted onco round, and then galloped two,- furlongs down the back. ■ St. Petersburg was worked over a couple of circuits on the tan. Lady Kilcheran and Merrivonia worked separately over a circuit. The former, went slowly, but Merrivonia mofed at a good three-quarter pace. Winning Way, who is still very excitable, trotted onco round, and was on and off the track the wholo way. Lambton, who now rates as a gelding, was trotted a couple of miles on tho tan. Semaphore and- Lady Volley were sent out to gallop live furlongs, but, as usual, the latter bolted, and Semaphore had to go alone. Merry Frank galloped half a milo pleasingly by himself. Time, 51sec. Avarice, who; appears to be 6ore, was given easy work. Styx trotted and cantered over a couple of circuits. St. Felix went on:e around on the tan, and then galloped three furlongs on the grass: " >. The most interesting gallop of the morning was that put up by Birkline (C. Emerson) and Beacon (I". Porter). Starting from the mile, tho pair went very fast for five furlongs, when Beacon retired, and Birkline came on under a strong pull. The time for the. full distance was lmin. ■13} sec. The Cup candidate acquitted himself well.. Kffort was given a brush over four furlongs on the tan. Laitts appears sore, and was-only given trotting exercise. Khamsin strode along at a fair paco on the tan, and a similar task was allotted Peroneal. Kilmore and Elevated galloped half a mile on the grass in Slsec. Royal Marine was given long, strong work over a couple of, circuits on the grass. The chestnut gelding, who is very tit, had Emerson in Hie saddle, and worked by himself. He seemed to relish his task, and pulled up exceedingly well.. .Dirge and Gipsy Belle sprinted three furlongs, and several other horses did useful i\ ork. "Mr. Highden's" horses, engaged at tho Wellington Racing Club's meeting, arrived at Upper Ilutt yesterday in charge of trainer G. Price. Tlio team comprises Ermerigarde, Neirene, Nylond, Mallard, Bronze, Blakcney, and Polymorphous. Nominations for all' events in tho Nelson Trotting Club's annual meeting, to be held on Wednesday, February 14, close with tho secretary to-day. The capable light-weight, C. Emerson, has Ix?en_ engaged to ride Royal Marino in the Wellington Cup. Yesterday Sir Knox was scratched for all engagements at tho Wellington Racing Club's summer meeting. Deploy, who figures at the bottom of the list in the Telegraph Handicap, was coupled yesterday with several horses in the Wellington Cup. The aunual sale of the Waikanae yearliiigs takes place' ou Tuesday next. ' Parable, who was sold last month to a South Island owner, is among tho acceptors for the Gore Cup, which is to.be ruii to-day. Artesian, winnor of the Perth Cup, is at present on his way from Frcmantfo to Sydney, where he is engaged in tie Doncaster Handicap and Sydney Cup. It is not often that the riding of any of the leading jockeys is questioned (says tho Melbourne "Argus") in this State at ainyratc, but R. Lewis was called beforo tho stewards at Jlontono to explain the running of Hulbrook in tho First Division Handicap. After the evidence had been heard it was decided to severely caution Lewis.
