the fish hatcheries site. (From Our Spccial Correspondent.) Masterton, January 10, An accident befell Mr. J. 11,I 1 , l'erry, of Sulphur Wells, a day or bio ago. Whilst engaged at jiis sheep dip he fell, and sustained a fracture of the small bone ot one of his legs. At latest accounts lie was progressing satisfactorily. The police made a raid lost evening on one of the local lmrdinghouses. They seized a quantify of liquor, and a prosecution will follow. Satisfactory arrangements have been come io between tile .Masterton Trust l.ands Trust and the curator of the Wellington Acclimatisation Sucicty for the, acquisition of a site for the fisli hatcheries on the Trust property. When it became known that the site upon which the hatcheries now stand had been privately acquired, it was feared that the fishponds would be lost to tho district. It is satisfactory to know that ajrangements have now been practically completed whereby tho hatcheries will bo retained to Masterton. ' Mr. C. A. Pownall, solicitor, of' this town, who has been seriously ill for some weeks, is renorted to be now on the way to recovery. The Opaki ltioe Club continued its trophy competitions under somewhat unfavourable conditions. Coloured figure targets were used. The highest scorer at the :100. .500, and 600 yards range was H. C. Jones, with 97. A triangular rifle match is to ho fired at Alfredton on Saturday next lietwecn the Alfredton, Ekefcahuna, and Mauricevillo. Clubs. Men for casual labour cannot be procured in Masterton just now. Harvesting and general farm work has absorbed every available hand. Domestic servants, too, are difficult to obtain. At the monthly meeting of the I.ansdowne School Committee, it was decided to ask the Education Board to invite fresh applications for the position of as-sistant-teacher at the school. The annual school picnic has been arranged for February IG. Tomatoes, which are usually sc-lling at this season of the year at tv;openco and threepence per pound, arc being retailed at cightpcnce. Mr. Frank Grady, a well-known bowling enthusiast, of Wellington, has presented two medals for competition by members of the Masterton Club.
