SEAMEN AND OWNERS.
PROSPECTS OF SETTLEMENT. Tho conference between shipowners and representatives of the Seamen's Union, fixed to commence yesterday, did not open on account of the owners being • still engaged parleying with the cargo, workers. So far as could be ascertained last evening the seamen's conference proper will not open until to-morrow, although it is proposed by tho delejjntes of either party to hold separate meetings today. , ItSofts' probable that the conference" will sit for some days, for thero are ■ many provisions in the Australian Award , which may not be approved by the one or the other side. In one particular tlie ; New Zealand men have been more for- j tunate than their Australian brothers— | they have already scoured preference, , which Mr. Justice Higgins, President of ■ the Federal Arbitration Court, rcfusedto 1 grant. On tho other hand, the Common- 1 wealth Award provides for an eight hours . day for dock hands on ships in port, and j this the owners may not grant vory willingly. It is thought probable that there , will bo a speedy settlement on the wages question, but other matters may give rise to some discussion. '
