FERRY TROUBLE.
MEN ASK FOR CONFERENCE. . A new but not altogether unexpected development occurred ■■ yesterday in • tho dispute as to wages and hours of work between the Ferry Company and their employees on the steamers. When last anything definite was done in tho matter the directors of the company refused to treat with the men in order to arrive at an agreement as to the points at issue, but they offered to assist the men in bringing the case before the Arbitration Court. This information was duly conveyed to (he nieu's agent (Mr. 0. d. Farland) some days ago, but he did not immediately reply. It is understood, however, that the compauv received a letter from him ,ycsterday to the effect that the Federation of Labour, which body the men have joined, would not agree to the case going before the Arbitration Court. Ho also renewed his request for a conference. Something will probably happen, in a day or two to give the dispute more definite shape, for of lato all tho attention of the Fodoration of Labour has been engaged in connection with' tho waterside workers' conference with . employers. Just now the position of the, ferry trouble is that tho men havo given.notice of intention to strike unless certain demands vero granted; that notice has expired, the demands have not been granted, and the boats aro still running. l
