MASTERTON NOTES.
9 (From Our Special Correspondent.) Masterton 1 , January 13. A meeting of the executive of the Masterton Competitions Society was held last evening, Dr. Cook occupying the chair. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The resignation of Mr. G. C. Branson as a member of tho executive was accepted, it was decided that renewed application be made to the Mastcrton Borough Council nnd Trust Lands Trust for financial assistance. Mr. \V. Oiliespio was appointed permanent secretary of thesociety, at a fixed salary. It was resolved that Messrs. C. N. Baeyertz and Robert Parker bo written to and asked for terms for judging elocution and music respectively at the next competitions. A sum of .£3OO has already been subscribed towards a fund which is being raised for tho provision of a Native hospital and home for the training of nurses at Masterton. At a meeting last night of the committee of the Amateur Swimming Club _ it was announced that entries were coming in freely for the aquatic sports to bo held"'on January 22. Competitors are expected from Wellington, Ilawkes Bay, nnd surrounding districts. A fireworks displn'r is to 1)0 made in the evening. Roman Catholic people of ; the Wairarapa intend holding a combined picnic at Newman on January 22. Special, trams are being run on tho occasion. Tho Mitsterton Trust Lands Trustees last night decided to favourably entertain a proposal of tho Wellington Acclimatisation Society for the leasing of a portion of the trust property at Kuripum for tho purpose of the fish hatcheries. A,, 00 , 1 "- mittee was appointed to confer with tho council of the Acclimatisation Society on the subject. . ' Tho Masterton Lawn Tennis Club has made complete arrangements for the lawn tennis tournament which is. to be.'held here on January 22. .Entries are being received from Pahiatua, Daimovirke, and other districts.
