CITY ORGANIST.
CONSIDERED AT AUCKLAND. Several applications for the position nf city urgamst were tabled by the town clerk at lust meeting of the Auckland City Council. Mr. llntriean asked if it had been decided whether the use of the new city organ wa< to be confined to local organists, or whether a city organist was to bo engaged. The Mayor: 1 think it is apparent to all of us that a city organist should he appointed. Every city with such a fine instrument as we .have has a speciallyretained musician. Mr. Tudehope suggested that when a selection was made, it should be by competent musicians. Mr. Shaw thought the council should make the selection. The Mayor thought that Mr. Brett, as donor of the organ, should be invited to confer with any committee tlio council might appoint; At the suggestion of Messrs. Entricnn and Meiiuio, the Mayor moved that the Finance Committee, in conjunction with Mr. Brett, 1;« deputed to go into questions of how to make the'best use of the organ, of appointing a city organist, and of fixing the salary for such position. The motion was carried.
