JEWELLERY AND BARBARITY.

For a while it seemed that modern woman was.. learning a lesson, and was about to discard the mass of jewellery worn..by her mother and her grandmother, in favour of a few well-selected ornaments. Only for a while, however, for, judging from the walking jewellery establishments to be seen any day in our streets, the fashion is again reverting.to the monstrous and vulgar displays of tho bygone days. In those days it was fashionable to wear masses of gold in every conceivable 'shape and form all over tho dress, whilst handfuls of jewels wore slung from every available vantage point. Quite recently a reaction set ini and what personal ornaments wero worn were few and choice. It seems, however, that women aro getting tired of thinking out what becomes them, and so resort. to a lavish display that they think will cover all defects. Onco again wo hear the rattle of some half-dozen coarso bangles on either wrist. Onco again pendulous bunches of gilt and glitter hang from the ears. Once again the fingers aro stiff with atrociously huge rings. It would be well for women to pauso a while and think what they are. doing. The tendency to revert to "a barbarous aboriginal typo is only too great in us nil. Tho highest art is to conceal art, and the only true beauty is beauty unadorned.
