Mr. Henniker Heaton, in an interview, stated that Sir Joseph Ward had been a great advocato of cheaper cables, and never failed to use all the eloexuenco in his power, and to offer large subsidies binding on New Zealand for a national cable. The deferred cablo concessions were too amusing to contemplate when it was realised that there were sixteen cables between England and America capable of carrying 225,000,000 words per annum, while only 21,000,000 words were sent.' It had been asserted, and not contradicted, that from six to ten of these lines were keptidlo by a ring of tested interests. This was tho only obstacle in the way of shilling cables.
