MASTERTON NOTES.

(From Our Special Correspondent.) Mastertun, January 9. The committee of the- Wairarnpa Amateur Athletic CluVinct last evening. A report! on the recent performanco of the di'iiaia "Jane," in aid of the fuuds of the club, was adopted. A programme- of events was arranged for the Park fete which'is shortly to be held. At the annual meeting of the congregation of St. Patrick's Church, the Very Kev. Dean M'Kenna gave an account of the transition for tho purchase of the fish ponds property. Hs stated that, he .rould take possession of the property in July, 1913. He had written to a member of tho council of the Acclimatisation Society, stating that he was ivilling to lease the society about two acres of the property (including the buildings and ponds) for any term from five to twenty-one years, and also to give them the right to take water through tho remaining property if they so desired. An announcement by the dean that he intended giving ,£250 from liis own pocket towards tho purchase of the property was received with applause. ' Local house agents report that there is a good demand for dwelling houses in Mastcrton at the present time. At or.o office there were eight applications between Saturday and Monday, but no houses were available. At the annual meeting of the congregation of St. Patrick's Church, the balancesheet showed that tho expenditure on the church and school had wen .£250. Tho dean stated that four stained-glass windows (presented by parishioners) were to be placed in the sanctuary during the coming yea* It was announced that tho annual picnic would be held at Newman on January 18, and the arrangements were well in hand. The following were appointed a church committee for ilie ensuing, year:—Messrs. 11. J. O'Leary, J. Bradbury, 11. J. Cassin, J. Savage, J. C. Cooper, J. O'Dowd, and W. Hedmond. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Dean M'Kenna for the manner in which he had conducted tho alfairs of the church during the year. Tomato crops in Masterton arc at least a month later than usual this year. The early crops were cut down by the frosts. Several farmers are threshing their cereal crops from the stock, 'ihe majority, however, are stacking. One farmer estimates that his oat crop will produce sixty-five bushels to the acre. ( The ordinary meeting of the Oddfellows' Ledge was held last, evening, Bro. J Winskill, N.G., occupying the chair. It was announced that the next meeting of the Past Grand Lodge would lie held at Greytown on Thursday evening. It was resolved to send a letter of condolence,to Bro. ,J. UesEoy regarding recent tereavenient. Officers for the ensuing term were installed by Bro. R. Krahagan, P.G.M. During tho quarter ending December 31 sixty patients were admitted to the Masterton Hospital, fifty-eight were discharged, and six died. During the year 1911 the number of patients admitted was 252, discharged 236, and died IG.
