Dacey (Colonial Treasurer) states that nothing was further from his thoughts than that.there should be political influence in the control of the railways. Hβ was bitterly opposed to such, influence, but there ought to be true Ministerial responsibility to Parliament.
Mr. Beeby (Minister for Labour) states that the Government has requested the Railway Commissioner to make definite improvements in. the conditions of .the employees. .These to include the recognition of an eight-hours' days for all grades, except at small country stations, a minimum wage of eight shillings per day for all adult servants, granting of leavo of absence to employees over twenty years' standing, as recognition for long service. MINISTER AND COMMISSIONER, (Reo. January 8, 9.10 p.m.) Sydney, January 8. ; The Railway Commissioner had an interview with Anting-Preinicr Beeby in reference to the proposed eight hours' day for railwaymen and other matters. ,Mr. Beeby subsequently stated that he wished to remove the impression that there were any strained relations between the Government and the Commissioner, and reiterated that the Government had no desire to ro-cstablish the old political control of the railways.
