THE CHARM OF BOWLS.
FOUR HUNDRED IN ACTION.
The Wellington Bowling Green presented a picturesque sight at tho opening of the Northern Bowling; Association's tournament yesterday morning. Half-way up tho grand stairway of what is perhaps as fine a bowling pavilion as thoro is in the world, the president, Mr. John Keith, stood, surrounded by some of tho leading officials of the association, whilst down below, on the green sward, stood a crowd of bofknnellcd bowlers,' gay in tho bright colours of tho clubs they are prepared to do battle for this week, huch was tho variety and colour combinations that n new club would surely be nonplussed to find distinfruisliing colours not already in use. As Mr. Keith declared tho tournament open, and admonished one and all to "go in and win," the' banner of the Northern Bowling Association was run up to the truck of the pavilion flag-pole, amidst cheers. The game of bowls provides a healthy, skill-demanding game for those who have passed the age for.indulgence in the more strenuous games, yet such is its" charm, and the spirit of geniality amongst .its adherents, that it has of recent years attracted many young men. Indeed, a feature of tho present tournament is tho number of young men engaged, in it, and not only as members of the rank and file, but in the capacity of skips. Given fine weather, tho bowlers cannot fail to have a great week.
