■ (From Our Own Correspondent.) Palmerston N„ January fi. Under, the new conditions the district covered by the Manawatu Mounted RiHes now includes the area from Pohangina to Woikanao. Tho corps is 120 strong. Lieutenant W. G. C. Smith is now in command. Captain Peach having been transferred to the 1 medical division. The public library has been' greatly improved by having the room . formerly occupied by the Philosophical Society's museum conneoted with the reading-room; The whole of the interior of the building has been renovated, and the conditions generally are much improved, though even now thp building is anything but a credit to a town of the importance of Palmerstoil.
The quarterly returns of the local Magistrate's Court are a.s follow:—The magistrate pro/tided over 30 sittings, and justices over 35; number of cases heard by magistrate, 103; aggregate amount sued for, .£2171 155.; amount received." .El IG7 ss; 3d.; number of cases heard in Chambers. ,27; orders made, other than judgment summonses, 2G; plaints entered, 211; distress warrants issued, 20'; judgment summonses issued, 3t; orders made, 9; warrants of committal issued, 4; writ of arrest issue, 1; summonses and other processes served. 280; warrants of committal executed by bailiff, 5; civil .fees, paid into Court in stamps, ,£110; licensing fees paid in stamps, JS. In criminal jurisdiction, 226 niales and 8 females were before the Court, and criminal fines paid into Court amounleil to JEl.ll lGs.
At a meeting of Swimming Club last evening, the rules, as drawn up by the committee, were adopted. Correspondence was read from the / Jveiv Zealand Amateur Swimming Association with reference to the affiliation of the club. The suggestion 'to hold a carnival on Anniversary Day was further discussod, but the fiual decision was held over till next meeting. An alarm was sounded on the fire bell last night about 9 o'clock, l.ho curtains in a house in Bangitikci Street having taken lire through a lighted candle coming in contact with them. The brigade was quickly on the snot, and the conflagration was put out before much damage w.is done
